About The Position

Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is a Bay Area 501(c)(3) founded in 2014 with the mission to change the face of STEM by removing systemic barriers to girls' participation. SAfG provides afterschool programs, camps, and family events for TK-6th grade children, with a focus on girls and under-resourced youth, to build STEM identity, belonging, and confidence. The organization is seeking mission-driven professionals to join its Board of Directors. Board members provide strategic oversight, financial stewardship, and community advocacy. This is a volunteer position. SAfG is currently seeking applicants for three board seats and one community advisor. The specific roles are: Member 1 (Finance), Member 2 (People & Legal), Member 3 (Open Expertise), and Community Advisor (parent, caregiver, or community member with lived experience).

Requirements

  • Deep commitment to SAfG's mission, values, and the communities served, particularly girls and under-resourced youth
  • Genuine enthusiasm for active participation in board meetings, committees, and events
  • Ability to offer strategic guidance and contribute to long-term organizational planning
  • Sound understanding of financial stewardship and fiduciary responsibility, including reviewing budgets and financial statements
  • Ethical leadership and integrity, with consistent adherence to conflict-of-interest policies
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to work constructively with diverse stakeholders
  • Willingness to serve as an organizational ambassador, including attending at least one networking event per fiscal year
  • Ability to support fundraising through leveraging networks, donor cultivation, or personal financial contribution
  • Sufficient availability to prepare for, and meaningfully contribute to, governance responsibilities
  • Expertise in financial management, investments, and accounting best practices (for Finance role)
  • Expertise in human resources or employment law (for People & Legal role)
  • A professional background not yet represented on the board (for Open Expertise role)
  • Lived experience connected to the girls and families SAfG serves (for Community Advisor role)
