About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a Vocational Instructor position at the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) in Mackenzie Point, Alaska. As a Vocational Instructor with Goose Creek Correctional Center, you will be responsible for teaching National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified courses. This includes setting up hands-on laboratories for instruction, supervising inmates for safety and compliance of NCCER’s performance testing, delivering NCCER tests to inmates, and submitting paperwork to the Accredited Training Sponsor. You will also counsel prisoners in areas of career development, education, and vocational training. Goose Creek Correctional Center is a minimum/medium custody facility that houses up to 1500 inmates and employs over 350 staff. You will be working in an educational/shop environment with daily interaction with inmates.

Requirements

  • Three years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable trade; OR Three years as a certified teacher in a vocational/technical construction or maintenance related training program; OR National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification in the applicable trade(s).
  • Knowledge of teaching, training, research, making presentations, lecturing, testing, and other instructional methods.
  • Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Holds self and others accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results. Determines objectives, sets priorities, and delegates work. Accepts responsibility for own actions and decisions. Complies with established control systems and rules.
  • Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hosties, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.
  • Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and response appropriately.
  • As a condition of employment, some positions will be required to obtain NCCER certification in the applicable field with one year of employment.
  • Some positions will require an extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants and will work with inmates requiring care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk.
  • Must pass a criminal history check.
  • Must be fingerprinted.
