About The Position

The City of Boca Raton has established a paid Vocational Apprenticeship Program designed to provide practical on-the-job work experience to individuals interested in learning a trade and building a career. This program also serves as a potential recruitment pool for future permanent City employees. Apprenticeships are offered on an ongoing basis based on departmental needs. All apprentices receive an hourly wage for hours worked. These are part-time positions, and apprentices are considered unclassified employees, ineligible for benefits or additional compensation. An assigned Department Coordinator will direct, supervise, and evaluate the apprentice's work performance and conduct.

Requirements

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or some technical vocational education/training.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 12 hours per week not to exceed a maximum of 25 hours per week (typically between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).
  • Requires a minimum commitment of six (6) months, preferably one (1) year.
  • Good moral character.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Able to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Able to work well with others.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and/or push articles weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to wear and/or use the appropriate personal protection equipment.
  • Must be able to sometimes work in adverse weather conditions and noisy environments.
  • Some knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair of various streets maintenance work.
  • Some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment required in the work.
  • Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull articles weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Some tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work.
  • Ability to climb a ladder.
  • Must be able to wear hard hat, safety glasses, goggles, safety harness, safety shoes/boots, and gloves.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, heights, noise, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, electrical hazards, moving mechanical parts, and confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Complete an online application form.
  • Complete required testing, if applicable.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Fulfill any pre-requisite OSHA or other mandated training, if applicable.
  • Be available for an in-person interview (over-the-phone interviews may be arranged).
  • Work part-time, no more than 25 hours per week (or an average of 25 hours per week over a one-year period).
  • Attend a mandatory orientation session and required training sessions.
  • Adhere to all City and Department policies.
  • Follow Department directives and complete assignments timely and satisfactorily.
  • Participate in Goal Setting, Performance Evaluation(s) sessions, and an Exit Interview with Human Resources.
  • Possess a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
  • Be able to lift, carry, and/or push articles weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to wear and/or use appropriate personal protection equipment.
  • Be able to sometimes work in adverse weather conditions and noisy environments.
  • Have some knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair of various streets maintenance work.
  • Have some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of equipment required in the work.
  • Wear proper attire while working in accordance with the City of Boca Raton's personnel rules and regulations policy.
  • Conduct him/herself in a professional manner.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained through the Apprenticeship Program.
  • Clock in and out each day and manage schedule with assigned Departmental Apprenticeship Coordinator.
