About The Position

Under general supervision, performs routine street maintenance work. FLSA status: Non-Exempt. Requirements

• Knowledge of job tasks expected to be performed, including the standards of workmanship required in assigned work field.
• Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on cleaning solvents and chemicals.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety practices to apply and enforce.
• Knowledge of general construction methods and practices, including equipment use and maintenance associated with asphalt pavements and concrete.
• Knowledge of the general principles, practices, methods, and materials used in public works street maintenance and repair work.
• Skill in operating vehicles, mechanical equipment, and heavy equipment including loaders, dump trucks, "boot" trucks, and backhoes.
• Skill in following and carrying out oral and written instructions.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
• Skill in operating and maintaining assigned power tools and equipment.
• Skill in working outdoors in all weather conditions while performing vigorous physical activities.
• Skill in reading maps and blue prints.
• Able to lift heavy objects up to 100 pounds and perform strenuous work.
• High School diploma or GED.
• A valid Arizona Driver's License is required.
• Must be able to pass an Arizona Department of Corrections background check.

Nice To Haves

• One (1) year experience in maintenance work
• One (1) year experience in asphalt pavement or concrete construction
• Must obtain an Arizona commercial driver's license, Class "A" with tanker endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
• Herbicide certification, B3 - Right of Way Weeds, must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
• Aquatics and Industrial Institutional certification license must be obtained within two years of hire.
• A five (5) year driving history record is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs a wide variety of tasks that support street maintenance programs, including routine street repairs, patching pot holes, placing skin patches over sunken areas, filling cracks in the pavement surface, and applying surface treatments.
• Repair concrete curbs and sidewalks by removing and replacing them.
• Sweep streets using a mechanical street sweeper.
• Control weeds by mowing or using herbicides to control growth along rights-of-way, drainage areas, and on airport grounds.
• Paints and re-stripes lanes and dividing lines on city streets.
• Performs routine graffiti abatement that includes painting, sandblasting, pressure washing, and using caustic agents.
• Provides and installs safety barricades and traffic controlling devices around construction areas and special events.
• Installs, replaces, and maintains City owned traffic signage; makes new signs as needed.
• Assists with inventory inspection process associated with streets, sidewalks, drainages, rights-of-way and traffic signs.
• Evaluates conditions of concrete curb and street pavement.
• Operates loaders, backhoes, asphalt "boot" truck, striping equipment, dump trucks, and asphalt rollers.
• Repairs and replaces traffic control devices.
• Assists with maintaining traffic signals, streetlights, and parking lot lights.
• Assists with installing traffic counters and participating in Public Works Outreach Programs that educate the public on street maintenance and traffic control programs.
• Work with Arizona Department of Corrections inmates.
• This position is subject to standby and emergency call outs.
