The Daily Progress, the newspaper of record for Charlottesville and Central Virginia since 1892, is seeking a photographer to help lead its news and sports coverage. While the role will serve as chief photographer for the newspaper and its subsidiaries, it will also need to collaborate with The Daily Progress’ team of skilled freelance photographers. Based in Charlottesville, The Daily Progress readership covers a population of half a million people living in Central Virginia. The Daily Progress has served the residents of Charlottesville and its surrounding counties for 135 years. Long associated with its native son Thomas Jefferson, his Academical Village at the University of Virginia and his mountaintop estate at Monticello, Charlottesville today is more than a historic college town in the Virginia backcountry. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville sits in the heart of what is now a multibillion-dollar wine country, known for years as the Napa of the East Coast and named "Wine Region of the Year" in 2023. The countryside also hosts a variety of equine sports, including racing, hunting and polo. Almost exactly 100 miles from the nation's capital, the city itself has become a satellite for many Washington agencies, as well as the contractors and consultants who assist them. The biotech industry also is booming, with a multimillion-dollar research center under development designed to rival North Carolina's Research Triangle. As a result, the region is growing quickly and is now the second-most expensive real estate market in all of Virginia outside of the immediate Washington suburbs. All of this lends itself to a variety of stories worth telling. The Daily Progress is looking for the right people to tell them.
