About The Position

The Telegram is seeking a multimedia journalist to join their team in St. John’s, NL. The main focus will be covering news stories across Newfoundland and Labrador, with a focus on political and health reporting. The role involves identifying and exploring issues important to the province's residents, explaining problems, and seeking potential solutions. The ideal candidate will be skilled at writing features and web reporting on immediate issues, proficient in storytelling, and able to write articles that condense information for online readers. The multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments and generate ideas to attract and retain readers for TheTelegram.com daily. Familiarity with newsletters, SEO, and WordPress is a bonus, with support and training provided. The candidate should be a team player, willing to collaborate on investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently as this is a work-from-home role. The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical, as is working closely with the managing editor and assistant news editor. This is a unionized job, working with a remote newsroom, beginning as soon as possible.

Requirements

  • Experience at a news organization in a deadline-oriented reporting/writing role.
  • Fluency in digital platforms, multimedia journalism and social media.
  • Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions.
  • Ability to work constructively as part of a newsroom team.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Skilled at writing features as well as web reporting on immediate issues.
  • Proficient at storytelling and able to write articles that can condense information in a way that explains or analyzes what’s happening for our online readers.
  • Strong understanding of newsletters, SEO and best practices for web.
  • Familiarity with platforms like Wordpress.
  • Knowledge and experience filing access to information requests considered an asset.
  • Ability to cover events in person as needed within St. John’s.

Responsibilities

  • Tell the stories of people in Newfoundland and Labrador, with an emphasis on political and health reporting.
  • Report and write stories for our website, as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of our platforms.
  • Use social media to find sources, story ideas and topics of interest to the community each day and respond to explain why these talking pieces are important to NL.
  • Respond quickly to stories that are important to our readers, turning around pieces that will help grow readership online by providing context, analysis and explanations.
  • Initiate and develop ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
  • Cultivate sources and establish expertise in order to break stories.
  • Work with digital teams to create other multimedia elements.
