The Foundations program is the gateway and first-year experience for all incoming students in the College of Visual Art and Design (CVAD) at the University of North Texas. It serves as the core for all undergraduate degree programs, introducing students to visual problem-solving and critical-thinking strategies through the study of art and design history, culture, and practices across disciplines. The curriculum prepares students for rigorous college courses in visual art, design, art education, and art history, emphasizing professional practice, critical thinking, and writing within a framework of maker-based studio courses. The program is conceptually driven, skills-based, and experiential, with faculty who are accomplished artists and designers with active national and international studio practices.
