Developing an AI-Driven Autonomous Formulation System at 12-ID-B. An AI-driven autonomous formulation laboratory system will be developed at beamline 12-ID-B in collaboration with user groups, including Dr. Liu's laboratory at the University of Illinois Chicago. The system will integrate a PAL robotic liquid-handling platform, additional syringe pumps for advanced sample preparation, and a UR robotic arm for sample transfer and SAXS measurements. In addition to the hardware infrastructure, dedicated software will be developed to control and coordinate the PAL platform, syringe pumps, and UR robotic arm. The software will also interface with beamline data acquisition, perform real-time SAXS data analysis, and make intelligent decisions based on the experimental results, enabling autonomous optimization of sample formulations. Visiting students will participate in the design, construction, and testing of the autonomous formulation system, as well as software development, under the supervision of Argonne National Laboratory staff. Through this project, students will gain hands-on experience in laboratory automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, scientific instrumentation, and data analysis. They will also use this system for their own research projects.
