About The Position

The Indigenous Liberal Studies (ILS) Department at IAIA invites applications for a full-time visiting assistant professor. This position focuses on Native American/Indigenous studies, social sciences, and research methodologies, aligning with the department's unique emphasis on Liberal Arts from a Native perspective. The department offers an AA degree in Native American Studies and a BA degree in Indigenous Liberal Studies, integrating various disciplines with Indigenous understandings. The foundation and mission of Indigenous Liberal Studies are built upon knowledge from a Native perspective and teaching as a sacred art.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in Native Studies or a closely related field.
  • Recent and relevant experience teaching Indigenous and Native American Studies at the college level.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professional achievement.
  • Proven background in social sciences and Indigenous research methodologies.
  • Broad knowledge of Indigenous communities, particularly Southwestern Indigenous Peoples, and their epistemologies.
  • Knowledge of best practices for both face-to-face and online teaching platforms.
  • Sensitivity towards Native Americans and an ability to motivate and teach students from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively use electronic technology for extended periods.
  • Ability to instruct for extended periods in a classroom environment.
  • Ability to use computers, projectors, and other academic instructional technology.
  • Ability to exercise effective communication skills using the spoken and written word to a wide range of audiences, particularly college students and faculty colleagues.
  • Ability to see, view, and review a wide range of relevant academic information.
  • Satisfactory background check.

  • Doctoral candidate in Native studies or a closely related field.
  • Expertise in tribal sovereignty and governance, Indigenous identity, decolonization, cultural preservation, language revitalization, Native education, Indigenous research methodologies and theory, Federal Indian policy, history, Native environmental justice, tribal critical race theory, racialization and criminalization, and Indigenous rights.
  • Research which contributes to Indigenous communities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses on a variety of topics, including their area of specialization.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and review of Indigenous Studies curriculum.
  • Participate and engage with local, national, and/or international Indigenous communities.
  • Support IAIA’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • Teach all levels of Indigenous and Native American Studies, including workshops and classes in tribal communities or institutions.
  • Assist the department chair with a plan for sustainable growth in students, faculty, courses, and lessons, including course development in advanced research.
  • Embed ILS courses, lessons, philosophies, and epistemologies across the IAIA curriculum to place ILS at the core of all IAIA disciplines.
