About The Position

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is seeking a committed educator for a 1-Year Visiting appointment in a generalist Graphic Design curriculum. The successful candidate will teach introductory courses in Graphic Design, including those serving as Foundations courses for both Graphic Design and Studio Art majors. The position is responsible for 24 contract hours annually, which translates to a 3/2 teaching load. The Art Department at UAFS offers a B.A. in Studio Art, a B.S. in Graphic Design, and minors in Art History and Studio Art. The program holds NASAD accreditation, and the B.S. in Graphic Design boasts an active alumni network and strong job placement rates. The program is housed within the Windgate Art & Design building, which features robust facilities for Design, Book Arts and Letterpress, Printmaking, Digital Photography, Drawing, and Painting. The position reports to the Art Department Head.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in Graphic Design, or related fields preferred; notable equivalent experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or related fields may be considered in extraordinary circumstances.
  • Documented creative/professional practice in Design.
  • Experience teaching at the college or university level.
  • Qualifying terminal degrees must be complete prior to date of hire.
  • Diverse knowledge in the field of Graphic Design.
  • Excellent pedagogical knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a team.
  • Knowledge and experience with assessment of student learning in the discipline, as well as in general education.
  • Ability to appropriately use instructional technologies.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Emphasis in typography, branding, and publication design will be viewed favorably.
  • Ability to draw curricular connections between Graphic Design and Book Arts, Art History, and/or Studio art.
  • Membership in professional organizations related to field of expertise is preferred.
  • Area of expertise is open; those with interests or training in more than one subject area are preferred.
  • A commitment to inclusive teaching practices, with specific knowledge of such practices’ implications for pedagogy and professional training in Graphic Design.
  • Knowledge of the historical and cultural context with which the candidate’s work and teaching engages.
  • Implement a variety of teaching methods, with potential teaching in diverse instructional modalities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach lower-level courses in graphic design and related courses, including Foundations.
  • Teach upper-level courses as arranged in accordance with the candidate’s area of expertise as needed by the department.
  • Assess and evaluate student learning.
  • Facilitate and respond to diverse student learning needs.
  • Employ an inclusive and inventive approach in the classroom.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates.
  • Requires consistent on-time attendance.
