About The Position

The Department of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross is seeking a visiting full-time faculty member for the 2026–2027 academic year, starting in August 2026. This one-year position is to replace professors on leave. The department is looking for a colleague who can teach courses on ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, and/or other ancient North African or West Asian cultures (pre-330 BCE). Specializations in archaeological, art historical, or textual evidence are welcome. The ability to teach multiple ancient cultures is a plus. The candidate is expected to propose at least three courses, with at least two being introductory level. Classics courses typically have 16–25 students. The College encourages innovative and inclusive teaching methods and offers resources to support faculty. Proposed courses can be historical or topical, and interdisciplinary or cross-cultural connections are encouraged. The visiting faculty member will have the opportunity to teach at least two courses twice, allowing for refinement during the academic year. Visiting full-time faculty teach 3 courses per semester.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. (or ABD) in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and excellence in inclusive pedagogies as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to offer courses on more than one ancient culture.
  • Prior undergraduate teaching experience of ancient cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 3 courses each semester.
  • Propose at least three courses, with at least two offered at the introductory level.
  • Contribute courses on ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, and/or other ancient North African or West Asian cultures (prior to 330 BCE) to the curriculum.
  • Teach at least two proposed courses twice during the two-semester term.
