About The Position

The University of Saint Joseph invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology and Philosophy to join a vibrant academic community committed to intellectual inquiry, excellent undergraduate teaching, and the formation of students as thoughtful, engaged members of society. We welcome scholars and teachers whose work engages theology, philosophy, religious studies, ethics, or related fields and who are excited to bring their expertise into conversation with a broad undergraduate curriculum. The successful candidate will teach introductory courses in Philosophy and Religious Studies, upper-level seminars, general education courses, and offerings connected to their scholarly interests. This position offers an opportunity to mentor and advise students, develop innovative courses and curricula, pursue scholarship and professional development, and participate actively in the intellectual and community life of the University. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the history of philosophy and an appreciation for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and its significance for the mission and intellectual life of a Catholic university.

Requirements

  • Substantial competence in theology, philosophy, religious studies, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and a commitment to undergraduate education.
  • The ability to teach across a broad range of the department’s Philosophy and Religious Studies curriculum.
  • Relevant scholarly expertise and a commitment to research and professional development.
  • Terminal degree (PhD or ThD) in Theology, Religious Studies, or Philosophy by the appointment start date is required.

Nice To Haves

  • An M.A. in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Theology or Religious Studies
  • An M.A. in Theology or Religious Studies and a Ph.D. in Philosophy
  • Other relevant advanced degrees, interdisciplinary preparation, professional experience, or demonstrated expertise that would prepare them to contribute to the undergraduate curriculum.
