About The Position

The Department of Biology at Mercer University is seeking to hire a visiting assistant professor or visiting lecturer. A one-year appointment or two-year appointment is negotiable, at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Requirements

  • Applicants should demonstrate a track record of, or the potential for, excellence in teaching in the context of a liberal arts college.
  • Title will be determined by degree-level completion.
  • Candidates wishing to be considered for the Visiting Assistant Professor rank must have a Ph.D. in a biological science.
  • ABD candidates will be considered at the rank of Visiting Instructor until the Ph.D. has been completed.
  • Candidates wishing to be considered for the Visiting Lecturer rank must have a Master’s degree or higher in a biology-related field.

Nice To Haves

  • The disciplinary focus of the applicant should integrate well with the current department faculty, and candidates with a background in physiology are preferred.
  • A promise of excellence in teaching and in the context of a liberal arts college is considered added advantages.

Responsibilities

  • The candidate is expected to teach both courses in the 100-level Human Anatomy and Physiology sequence as well as an intermediate plant and animal physiology course, and one of the courses in the introductory biology sequence for majors (topics to include plant and animal physiology, ecology, and evolution).
  • Responsibilities include teaching five to six courses (27 hours) per academic year at the undergraduate level, including both of our Human Anatomy and Physiology courses (BIO 131 and BIO 132), the second of our two-semester introductory biology courses (BIO 172), and an intermediate plant and animal physiology course (BIO 260).
