About The Position

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of St. Thomas is seeking a one-year, full-time, visiting Assistant Professor specializing in Spanish Peninsular Literatures and Cultures for the 2026-2027 academic year. The successful candidate will teach across the Spanish curriculum, including upper-division courses in Spanish Culture and Civilization, Introduction to Spanish (Hispanic) Literature, and core Spanish language sequence courses. The ability to teach a graduate-level course in their online MA in Spanish is a plus. The department seeks a generalist in Spanish Peninsular literature and culture, with specializations welcome in areas such as Medieval and Early Modern/Golden Age, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century, or Twentieth Century and Contemporary literature and cultures. Concentrations in Transatlantic and Postcolonial Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Visual Culture and Media, and/or Iberian Studies and Regionalism are also encouraged. The position requires a commitment to teaching excellence, scholarship, and service, with an emphasis on creating inclusive learning environments for diverse students, including heritage Spanish speakers. The faculty member will teach six courses (24 credits), maintain an active research agenda, and participate in departmental service and professional engagement.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. (U.S. or Foreign Equivalent) in Spanish (Hispanic Literatures and Cultures) or a related field, or ABD candidates nearing completion of the Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to teach across multiple areas of the Spanish curriculum.
  • Ability to teach upper-division courses in Spanish Culture and Civilization.
  • Ability to teach Introduction to Spanish (Hispanic) Literature.
  • Ability to teach multiple sections in the core Spanish language sequence.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Ability to create inclusive learning environments that support students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds, including heritage Spanish speakers.
  • Evidence of effective teaching informed by critical, culturally responsive pedagogical practices.
