About The Position

Roanoke College is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science to begin in August 2026. This position is at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor and requires a candidate with energetic vision, creative thought, and a collaborative spirit. The college is eager to expand its expertise into Applied Computer Science, cybersecurity, and large language models. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in teaching a wide range of undergraduate computer science and data science courses in a liberal arts setting, mentoring experiential learning opportunities, and supporting efforts to expand the offerings in Computer Science and Data Science. Evidence of potential for highly effective classroom teaching is required. The teaching load is 8 units, with lecture sections counting as one unit and lab sections ranging from 0.5 to 1 unit. Anticipated courses for the 2026-2027 academic year include CPSC 120 – Programming, CPSC 250 – Data Structures and Algorithms, CPSC 311 – Machine Learning, CPSC 370 – Data Mining, CPSC 450 – Theory of Computation, and DATA 170 – Exploring Data.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree or higher with relevant professional experience is required
  • Evidence of potential for highly effective classroom teaching is required
  • A strong interest in teaching a wide range of undergraduate computer science and data science courses in a liberal arts setting
  • A strong interest in mentoring a variety of experiential learning opportunities
  • A strong interest in supporting efforts to expand the offerings in Computer Science and Data Science

Nice To Haves

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely-related field is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Teach a standard full-time course load as defined by the college (may be a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses). The teaching load is 8 units, where lecture sections are one unit and lab sections range from 0.5 to 1 unit.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality courses in the faculty member’s area(s) of expertise
  • Use inclusive, effective, engaging, and current pedagogical practices
  • Fairly assess student learning and provide timely feedback
  • Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with FERPA and college regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.
  • Hold regular office hours to provide student support
