About The Position

Perform evaluation and assessment duties and functions in support of the Criminal Investigations Division; work as the liaison between investigations and victims to provide resources and increase engagement; identify and utilize resources to support victims of various types of domestic violence and abuse; perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing. Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, or sociology: and Three (3) years law enforcement or victim assistance experience.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Review and assess cases and sexual assault evidence kit DNA results; prioritize victims through initial evaluation of report information using lethality indicators.
  • Contact sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking victims to assess the nature and severity of the situation; determine what type of follow-up action may be needed to prevent the continuation and escalation of violence; advise victims of next steps related to the investigation.
  • Create and initiate action plan for each investigation; initiate referrals and recommended actions, including contacting District Court, District Attorney's Office, Victims Assistant Unit, Rape Crisis Center, SANE, and Crime Victims Reparation Commission.; identify and utilize resources to support victims, including restraining orders, safety planning, and financial assistance, as appropriate.
  • Gather and enter data on number of reports reviewed and victims contacted; provide summary statistics including number/percentage of repeat offenders, arrests, felonies, domestic violence-related homicides, victim demographics, and follow-up actions; assess baseline data and accomplishments to determine effectiveness of program and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication, coordination, and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, victim service organization, the District Attorney's Office, and the Courts.
  • Develop and sustain a process for accessing databases maintained by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and the New Mexico State Police Violent Crimes staff; partner with these agencies to identify repeat offenders, common patterns, and trends.
  • Participate in monthly meetings hosted by the Albuquerque Family Advocacy Center Coordinating Committee; undertake special projects at the direction of higher-level management staff.
  • Periodically meet with services providers including Resources, Inc., Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), and the Asian Family Center, to discuss mutual issues.
  • Work with personnel from the District Attorney's Office and District Court to resolve issues raised by victims regarding Order of Protection, court proceedings, and other judicial aspects of the investigation.
  • When Assigned to the Cold Case Unit: Review police reports and maintain case files in the Cold Case Unit.; assist detectives with categorizing the reception of tips
  • Contact victims’ families to assist in communicating follow-up action by detectives; advise victims of next steps related to the investigation.
  • Assist detectives with the collection and proper handling of evidence to include, video surveillance, audio, photography and other items related to violent crime investigations.
  • Periodically meet with service partners to assist in the Cold Case investigation.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of crisis outreach.
