About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Violence Prevention, the Advisor participates in the development and implementation of violence prevention initiatives at all Providence Health Care (PHC) sites. The Advisor is responsible to ensure PHC meets organizational objectives in addition to maintaining compliance with OH&S standards and regulations. The position assists in the development of core and risk specific curricula for workplace violence prevention education that meets the needs of all employees within PHC, and that allows the organization to honour agreements reached between healthcare employers and unions to enhance violence prevention initiatives. Facilitates in-person training to all in-house Public Safety Officers/Safety Support Workers in Trauma Informed Practice, through a train-the-trainer model. Provides regular reporting to the Ministry of Health on the relational security initiative, and supports the implementation of Ministry's Workforce Violence Prevention Policy Directive and framework, including regular reporting to the Ministry's Health and Safety Unit. The Advisor will assume leadership and budgetary responsibilities for employees selected to be trained to provide violence prevention education. The Advisor enhances partnerships with key stakeholders both internal and external at a variety of levels. The position provides ongoing consultation to multidisciplinary health care teams across PHC and represents stakeholders on committees and working groups as required.

Requirements

  • A degree or diploma in occupational health and safety, nursing, social work or a related discipline is required.
  • Five (5) years of progressive health and safety experience in a large unionized organization, preferably in a health care environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current health and safety legislation, regulations and statutes.
  • Strong mediation and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to problem solve complex issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present clear and decisive information, using the principles of adult education.
  • Ability to provide leadership, guidance and direction to others including team members, leaders and staff.
  • Ability to effectively organize, prioritize and delegate work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, at all levels of the organization, with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of critical incident interventions, risk assessment and incident investigation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of research methodology and commitment to program evaluation.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including various computer software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must be willing and able to receive appropriate Occupational First Aid Level 2 (OFA2) training and be a part of the workplace first-aid team at the Providence Health Care 1190 Hornby offices.

  • Engages staff, managers and leaders in the analysis of violence data and supports them in the development of action plans to address issues.
  • Facilitates violence prevention education including orientation; promotes safety awareness through on-going education and training throughout PHC.
  • Develops programs/strategies that eliminate or effectively control risks in the health care setting in accordance with regulation.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders and participates in local and provincial Violence Prevention Committees.
  • Participates in the on-going development and improvement of the patient alert system and related processes.
  • Coordinates the completion of violence risk assessments, workplace inspections and incident investigations.
  • Uses data from risk assessments, inspections, and investigations to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure best practices.
  • Facilitates in-person training to all in-house Public Safety Officers/Safety Support Workers as they onboard, in Trauma Informed Practise, through a train-the-trainer model.
  • Provides regular reporting to the Ministry of Health on the relational security initiative, including training completion, and violence reporting as determined by OHS Council and the Ministry.
  • Supports the implementation of Ministry's Workforce Violence Prevention Policy Directive and framework, including regular reporting to the Ministry's Health and Safety Unit.
  • Monitors performance regarding compliance with the goals of the Violence Prevention Program and regularly evaluates the effectiveness of the program.
  • Maintains an awareness of the trends and issues in health care, specifically violence prevention, through education, literature reviews and other means.
  • Identifies opportunities and strategies to enhance delivery of educational information.
  • Provides expertise and guidance to staff and leaders regarding effective violence prevention and management techniques, coaches and mentors staff and enables development opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
