About The Position

New York Magazine is seeking a creative, fast, and detail-oriented Video Editor to edit mostly short-form video for social platforms at the pace of a digital newsroom. The Editorial team, which is at the core of everything New York Magazine does, includes six verticals and an award-winning magazine. They aim to create content that is smart and funny, covering politics, culture, food, shopping, or style trends, to help readers navigate urban life and fast-moving culture. Editors strive for stories and magazine events that are sharp, provocative, memorable, useful, and, at turns, both playful and serious.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of professional video editing experience (editorial, digital media, or agency)
  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects.
  • A sharp editorial eye and an instinct for pacing, tone, humor, and narrative clarity.
  • Experience editing across multiple aspect ratios and formats.
  • Knowledge of rights management, captioning, and publishing workflows.
  • Familiarity with codecs, transcodes, deliverables, metadata, and media asset management best practices.
  • A love for New York Magazine’s storytelling sensibility — and the ability to translate it visually.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced production environment while delivering against tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work across different brands and on different platforms.
  • Strong storytelling capabilities.
  • An understanding that social video changes rapidly.
  • A strong grasp of the social landscape, its various platforms and audiences, and constantly evolving trends.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in motion design, Photoshop, and Figma.

Responsibilities

  • Edit short- and midform videos for New York Magazine’s social platforms, including its six verticals, Intelligencer, Vulture, The Cut, Curbed, Grub Street, and The Strategist.
  • Collaborate with social editors/producers and designers to shape stories, and define visual tone, pacing, and rhythm.
  • Create motion graphics, sound design, and color correction as needed.
  • Ensure consistency with editorial and brand standards.
  • Add structure to our media management: create production templates, naming conventions, file-delivery standards, and backups.
  • Produce or support production of video projects or assignments as needed, including pitching concepts and shooting.
  • Cover live events as needed and quickly turn around edits for live social publishing.
  • Stay on top of video trends and emerging editing styles that align with our voice.
