About The Position

This position is responsible for contacting and interviewing victims and witnesses under the direction of the City’s Prosecutors; assisting in the preparation, organization and maintenance of related records and reports; assessing safety needs of victims and referring to appropriate community resources; educating victims about the criminal justice system and assisting them throughout the pending criminal case. The nature of the work performed is highly confidential and follows established procedures and general directions; incumbents operate independently and apply established guidelines and alternatives to make routine judgments and decisions.

Requirements

  • One year experience in area of domestic violence services, witness interviewing in a legal office, family law and guardianship, or related field.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews victims, assesses safety needs, and provides information and referrals to appropriate community agencies; maintains ongoing contact with victims throughout the criminal case process; and maintains detailed records documenting victim communication.
  • Interviews victims; prepares reports and summaries for the Prosecutors, including documentation of victim contacts; assists prosecutors in preparing cases for hearings and trials; and prepares reports for the court as requested.
  • Interviews witnesses, maintains ongoing contact with witnesses throughout the criminal case process; and maintains detailed records documenting witness communications.
  • Documents case activity in the case management system; prioritizes assigned cases based on court calendars and operational needs; maintains case tracking systems for individual caseloads; and ensures written reports are submitted to prosecutors at arraignment, pre-trial and trial.
  • Assists in the preparation, organization and maintenance of case related records including case lists, victim files, and resource information; and provides information to city Prosecutors and other appropriate staff as required.
  • Attends and assists victims during arraignment, trial, and subsequent hearings.
  • Coordinates with individuals, agencies working, and other individuals involved in assigned cases to facilitate communication and support case progression.
  • Serves as backup to the Confidential Legal Assistant as assigned.
