About The Position

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Victim Advocate II. This vital role provides essential support services to victims and witnesses throughout the criminal justice process. A Detention Victim Advocate provides support, information, and services to victims of crime whose offenders are currently detained or involved in the detention system. We are committed to providing a supportive and respectful environment for those we serve. The location for this position is in the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. Requirements

US Citizen
An Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution is required, along with a minimum of three years or more of experience in Social Services, the Criminal Justice System, or Law Enforcement.
Equivalent combinations of education and relevant professional experience will also be considered.
Must possess a valid SC Driver’s license (or obtain upon acceptance of the position) and meet the requirements of the County’s motor vehicle policy.
Honorably discharged from the military (if applicable).
Have no pending cases or criminal felony convictions (misdemeanors may require expungement).
No THC or Marijuana use within 365 days; some drugs are automatic disqualifiers.
No student loans in default status.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
A demonstrated capacity for tact, empathy, and discretion when interacting with individuals experiencing emotional distress.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines.

Nice To Haves

Victim Service Provider certification is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Offer timely victim notifications, including inmate release, bond hearings, court hearings, bond decisions, releases, transfers, and other detention-related updates such as transfers and disciplinary actions.
Maintain strict compliance with mandated notification requirements under state victim-rights laws and agency policy.
Prepare and maintain accurate case notes, statistics, documentation, notifications, and follow-up records in accordance with departmental standards.
Guiding victims and witnesses through the legal process.
Maintaining regular contact with victims/witnesses via telephone, mail, and occasional in-person meetings to provide updates on offender status.
Serving as a liaison between victims, employers, law enforcement agencies, social service providers, and non-profit organizations.
Representing the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office at community events and functions.
Providing support to victims attending bond hearings, court appearances, and parole hearings.
Preparing regular case status reports and maintaining accurate and confidential case files.
Advising victims on relevant case developments.
