About The Position

Deer Lake First Nation is a vibrant and progressive remote fly-in community in Northern Ontario with approximately 1,300 residents. The community and school are deeply connected through a shared respect for land-based learning, Indigenous knowledge, and cultural traditions. This is an exciting opportunity for an educational leader who is passionate about student success, community engagement, and culturally responsive education. The region offers breathtaking natural scenery and year-round outdoor activities, including: Ice fishing and fishing, Kayaking and canoeing, Snowmobiling, Guided outdoor experiences and land-based activities. Deer Lake First Nation School is seeking a dynamic, compassionate, and collaborative Vice Principal to support the academic success and well-being of students while fostering a safe, inclusive, and culturally grounded learning environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal, staff, students, families, and community members to promote educational excellence while honouring Indigenous culture, traditions, and values.

Requirements

  • Ontario College of Teachers certification (or eligibility)
  • Leadership experience in an educational setting preferred
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous education and culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Nice To Haves

  • Principal Qualification Program (PQP) completed or in progress is considered an asset
  • Experience working in First Nation or northern communities is an asset
  • Commitment to student-centred learning and community collaboration

Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day administration and operation of the school
  • Assist with instructional leadership and staff support
  • Promote student achievement, attendance, and well-being
  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, and community partners
  • Support culturally responsive and land-based educational programming
  • Assist with student discipline and restorative practices
  • Help coordinate school programs, events, and activities
  • Support implementation of special education and student support initiatives
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and inclusive school climate
