About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education is seeking applications for an Administrative Teaching vacancy for a Vice-Principal position. The Strait Regional Centre for Education is responsible for delivering the public-school program to approximately 5,948 students in 20 schools across the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond. With the support of approximately 1,166 staff members, the SRCE strives for excellence in lifelong learning. The role involves providing leadership and assisting the principal in implementing the Public Schools Program and curriculum to maximize student learning. The vice-principal is also responsible for the orderly operation of the school in the absence of the principal and for carrying out any duties assigned by the principal.

Requirements

  • Master of Education or currently enrolled.
  • Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience in a public school.
  • Completion, or currently enrolled in a graduate level program in inclusive education or related field.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, community, and outside agencies to better meet the needs of students in the school and to use appropriate communication modes including current technologies.
  • Ability to be a positive contributor to an administrative team and to assist the school staff to achieve the goals and objectives as well as to follow the policies and procedures of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Strait Regional Centre for Education.
  • Ability and commitment to support staff and educational partners in decision-making by demonstrating an energetic and collaborative leadership style.
  • Ability to assist the principal in creating and maintaining a safe, orderly, positive and effective teaching and learning environment.
  • Formal, individualized student assessment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including report-writing.
  • In-depth familiarity with a wide range of exceptionalities, learning challenges, sensory deficits, disabling conditions, etc. and their implications for successful educational programming.
  • Ability to work as a team member in all phases of educational programming.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all pertinent provincial and SRCE policies pertaining to the instruction of students with special needs.
  • Skills in communicating and working in collaborative partnerships for programming.
  • Ability to work closely with Teacher Assistants (TAs) to oversee and ensure appropriate educational programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a variety of teaching models (group, individual, co-teaching, learning centre).
  • Training and experience in the development and implementation of IPPs.
  • Experience in working with children and youth and with special needs.
  • Experience in supporting accessible learning (eg. universal design for learning).
  • Demonstrate effective use of a variety of Assistive Technologies for students with special needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Education administration experience
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of technologies used to enhance instruction and learning (eg. Mimio, Google Classrooms, etc)
  • Knowledge and/or experience in implementing inclusive teaching and assessment strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the principal in taking all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance at school of the students enrolled in accordance with policies established by the Regional Centre.
  • Assist in the completion of required documents as requested by the SRCE and/or the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
  • Assist in the identification of staffing needs for the school and to assist in the selection of staff.
  • Assist in maintenance of financial records.
  • Ensure that appropriate evaluation techniques are used for both students and staff.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a system to handle organizational tasks such as student records, teacher records, attendance, purchasing, budgets and timetables.
  • Assist in the hiring of substitute teachers as necessary.
  • Ensure the security of the school building.
  • Perform other such tasks as are assigned from time to time by the principal of the school.
