SMES - Vice Principal with a Teaching Assignment
About The Position
St. Mary's Elementary School is seeking a Vice Principal with a Teaching Assignment for the 2026-2027 school year, effective August 1st, 2026. The school is located in Aylesford, Kings County, serving students from Primary to Grade 5, with a projected enrollment of 188 students and 14.88 full-time equivalent teaching positions. The Vice Principal will support the Principal in providing instructional leadership, ensuring curriculum implementation to maximize student learning, and managing the school's operations in the Principal's absence. Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Public School Administrators Association of Nova Scotia Agreement. Priority will be given to current Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education administrators who are members of PSAANS, followed by applicants eligible for a Nova Scotia Teaching License.
Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years exemplary teaching experience in a public school.
- The ability to provide instructional leadership.
- The ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, community, and outside agencies to better meet the needs of students in the school.
- The ability to use appropriate communication modes including current technologies.
- The ability to be a positive contributor to an administrative team.
- The ability to assist the school staff to achieve the goals and objectives as well as to follow the policies and procedures of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education and the school.
- The ability and commitment to support staff and educational partners in decision-making by demonstrating an energetic and collaborative leadership style.
- The ability to assist the principal in creating and maintaining a safe, orderly, positive and effective teaching and learning environment.
- Hold a valid Nova Scotia Teaching License, or be eligible for a Nova Scotia Teaching License.
Nice To Haves
- A Master’s of Education Degree in instructional/educational leadership or its equivalent is preferred.
- Demonstrated successful instructional leadership at the elementary school level is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Principal in being responsible for the positive, safe, respectful learning and working environment for all stakeholders.
- Assist the Principal in establishing a school-wide vision of commitment to high standards and academic success for all students.
- Assist the Principal in providing leadership, cultivating leadership in others, and managing people, data, and processes.
- Complete required documents as requested by the Centre and/or the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
- Assist the Principal in identifying staffing needs for the school and in the selection of staff.
- Assist the Principal in taking all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance at school of the students enrolled.
- Assist the Principal with supervising school-based staff, including participation in attendance management, performance management, and addressing personnel matters.
- Assist the Principal and support professional growth through professional development planning and ongoing feedback.
- Ensure that appropriate evaluation techniques are used for both students and staff.
- Assist the Principal in monitoring the maintenance of systems to handle organizational tasks such as student records, teacher records, attendance, purchasing, budgets, and timetables.
- Assist the Principal to ensure replacement staff are hired when necessary.
- Assist the Principal to ensure the safety and security of the school.
- Assist the Principal to ensure maintenance of financial records and compliance with financial policies and procedures.
