About The Position

The VP, Product Strategy is responsible for identifying and shaping new strategic opportunities for Avalon, including new products, material expansions of existing offerings, channel partnerships, and strategic partnerships that extend Avalon's market reach. This is a forward-looking, externally oriented role focused on identifying Avalon's next strategic direction, rather than managing or optimizing the current product roadmap. The VP, Product Strategy maintains strong knowledge of the broader healthcare landscape and a genuine curiosity about where the market is heading, working closely with Avalon's executive leadership team to translate that outside view into Avalon's next strategic move. Success in this role is reflected in a steady pipeline of validated, well-reasoned opportunities brought from concept to investment-ready recommendation, including at least one material new opportunity that Avalon greenlights and begins to pursue, and trusted judgment from executive leadership on which new opportunities are worth Avalon's investment. This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon’s corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in product strategy, corporate strategy, venture/innovation, or new product development, including at least 4+ years in a senior leadership role focused on identifying and building new opportunities, rather than primarily managing existing product lines.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Deep experience in healthcare, including payer, health plan, laboratory/diagnostics, value-based care, or health IT strongly preferred.
  • A track record of originating and validating new product, expansion, or partnership opportunities from inception, ideally within a regulated or clinically complex environment.
  • An established professional network within healthcare or diagnostics, or a demonstrated ability to build one quickly.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with the ability to build market models and business cases using incomplete information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting new concepts to executive leadership and securing buy-in.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with diagnostic or laboratory benefit management, genomic testing, or precision medicine.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems or workflows, such as clinical data integration, EHR-embedded decision support, or interoperability.
  • Prior experience in a corporate strategy, innovation, venture, or new-business-development function at a health plan, diagnostics company, or health technology company.
  • Exposure to life sciences or pharmaceutical business models, such as market access, companion diagnostics, or real-world evidence.
  • Experience with payment integrity and/or revenue cycle management (RCM).
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and a strong bias toward independent, self-directed exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously scan the healthcare market, including new technologies, data sources, care models, and unmet needs, to identify opportunities for new products, expansion of existing offerings, or channel and strategic partnerships.
  • Explore precision medicine opportunities to address under-testing, delayed diagnosis, and mismatches between patients and the therapies best suited to them, closing the gap between diagnostics and treatment decisions.
  • Build and maintain an active industry network through attendance at industry events and conferences, cultivating relationships with potential partners and maintaining strong visibility into where the broader healthcare market is heading.
  • Develop well-supported business cases for promising opportunities, including market sizing, competitive landscape analysis, clinical feasibility assessment, and a credible path to revenue.
  • Partner with Avalon’s executive leadership team to stress-test new concepts for scientific soundness and commercial viability prior to recommending investment.
  • Maintain a current view of the healthcare, health data, and value-based care markets, and translate market trends into concrete opportunity areas.
  • Evaluate new business models and partnerships that could extend Avalon’s value beyond its current client base, including new partner types, channel relationships, and business models, as candidate paths to growth.
