The Vice President of Preconstruction will also directly manage the Preconstruction department for assigned offices and contribute to business development efforts.

Requirements

  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience successfully estimating (conceptual and hard bid) construction projects for a general contractor.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Proven track record of effectively managing others.
  • Design-build experience on relevant project types.
  • Experience in value-engineering.
  • Valid State-issued driver’s license and vehicle insurance meeting Alston Construction liability coverage requirements and satisfactory driving record.
  • OSHA 10-hour Certification.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist management in general business operations by leading the establishment and maintenance of best-in-class preconstruction services (processes, procedures, best practices, mentoring/development/training of Preconstruction/Estimating staff).
  • Seek ways to increase client satisfaction, improve efficiency and productivity, and increase profitability.
  • Directly manage the Preconstruction department for assigned office(s).
  • Assist with business development.
  • Use discretion and independent judgment to perform daily duties and resolve issues to minimize risk.
  • Serve on the management team and act as the liaison and subject matter expert for Preconstruction.
  • Implement company goals and protocols for preconstruction operations and partner in planning department strategies.
  • Establish and communicate short and long-term goals and objectives for the Preconstruction department in coordination with VP/GMs and SVP/RMs, ensuring national alignment for high-quality, end-to-end preconstruction services across multiple projects, offices, and markets.
  • Anticipate short-term and long-term future consequences and trends.
  • Develop and implement preconstruction standards and procedures.
  • Develop standards to manage the design process (design team, budget, client through permit documents).
  • Make recommendations for improving business operations, client satisfaction, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Identify and qualify subcontractors nationally and maintain associated database.
  • Solicit, negotiate, and manage national purchasing agreements with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Work with business unit management to identify staff development needs, participate in recruiting, and make hiring recommendations.
  • Onboard, mentor, develop, and train Preconstruction staff.
  • Develop and encourage professional growth in others.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for assigned offices to ensure high performance and service levels from the Preconstruction team.
  • Oversee the development of thorough, accurate, and competitive cost estimates through all design phases.
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking historical cost analysis from completed projects.
  • Provide design assistance and cost data regarding project feasibility to clients.
  • Coordinate with preconstruction and project teams for constructability reviews and produce detailed preconstruction schedules.
  • Ensure preconstruction-PM transition meetings are held for proper turnover to the Operations team.
  • Ensure adherence to subcontractor prequalification requirements.
  • Manage the timely processing of all subcontracts and work with management to resolve subcontractor contract comments.
  • Assist in identifying potential new clients and projects by understanding company services.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with prospective and current clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Participate in interviews and presentations with potential clients, providing technical expertise.
  • Research and analyze the marketplace for strategic opportunities and recommend strategies for winning profitable new business.
  • Identify new work opportunities and advise management of potential projects, leading or participating in pursuits.
  • Coordinate with Marketing to develop and maintain consistent proposal documents.
  • Assist in developing and facilitating professional and competitive proposals and presentations.
  • Assist in the execution of marketing plans.
  • Research market trends and competitor marketing materials.
  • Recommend strategies for generating new opportunities through social media.
  • Provide assistance and evaluations to Risk Management and VP/GM regarding potential contract, cost, construction feasibility, and insurance risks.
  • Organize and lead monthly Preconstruction conference calls and annual Preconstruction conference.
  • Lead or participate in other applicable meetings, presentations, and forums.
  • Escalate concerns to VP/GMs and SVP/RMs as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
