About The Position

Dow Jones is seeking a Vice President of Product Design to lead their Barcelona office's Product Design team. This role is a key part of the Design & Research Leadership team and is responsible for setting the tone and fostering a collaborative culture for the design team in Barcelona, aligning with global Design Leadership in NYC. The VP will be instrumental in building the Design team into a strategic force that empowers users and drives Dow Jones' businesses forward. This is a leadership role for an inspirational Creative Leader who raises the bar for design and supports the growth of their team. The ideal candidate is an empathetic and pragmatic individual with strategic influence across product, technology, marketing, and editorial stakeholders, capable of guiding alignment across different time zones.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of equivalent experience working on a product design team contributing to the product design direction of a consumer or B2B business (preferably both).
  • Experience establishing broad strategies for a design organization, including managing managers and influencing/upping senior independent contributors.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience executing design on subscription-based and/or ad-supported products.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating successful products and thoughtful analysis of unsuccessful ones.
  • Ability to lead and take initiative, balancing strategic goals with daily tactical opportunities, and managing resourcing.
  • Expertise working on mobile, web-based, and responsive design.
  • Strong grasp of UI, HCI, Accessibility, and UX principles.
  • Expertise with component-based design, Design Systems, Figma, and other design tools (ProtoPie, etc.).
  • Strong proficiency with G-suite products.
  • Experience with professional collaboration tools such as Jira, Miro, Confluence, and Airtable.
  • Comfortable in a hybrid working environment and able to influence from a distance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the design of News or Financial Services.
  • Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards and compliance requirements for domestic and global markets.

Responsibilities

  • Lead by example as a role model for the design team, bringing advanced experience and passion for design.
  • Set and own a vision and strategy for Product Design within the Barcelona office, aligned with global standards and company business strategies.
  • Communicate and evangelize goals to executive leadership across the globe.
  • Oversee design and implement design processes for all products and services across the portfolio, ensuring user-friendliness, effectiveness, and visual appeal.
  • Advocate for investment in the growth and development of designers, establishing internal and external development opportunities.
  • Act as a connector, collaborator, and instigator by forming connections with Editorial, Technology, Product Management, and Marketing teams.
  • Challenge the status quo to push products forward in new ways.
  • Understand marketing and brand differentiation needs, driving consistency across platforms while knowing when to deviate intelligently.
  • Advocate for bringing brand stakeholders into the design process.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest design trends and technologies, sharing knowledge and contributing to the understanding of the business environment.
  • Serve as an advocate for users, keeping their needs at the heart of the customer experience.
