Vice President, Electrical Engineering

Mainspring Energy•Menlo Park, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Mainspring Energy manufactures fuel-flexible, low-emissions local power solutions. Its Linear Generator couples a chemical reaction and thermally driven expansion directly to a linear motor for power generation and control, placing controls and power electronics at the center of the design. The Vice President, Electrical Engineering will lead electrical hardware development and help balance system-level engineering tradeoffs in a dynamic environment. The role calls for deep expertise in power electronics, motors, inverters, PCBA design, mixed-signal routing, low-noise analog signal conditioning, and high-EMI environments, along with practical experience commercializing power electronics and achieving high-volume manufacturing, quality, reliability, and low cost. The position reports to the SVP of Engineering and is expected to be onsite at least 60% of the time at Mainspring’s Menlo Park headquarters. Mainspring values Pragmatic Optimism, Excellence without Ego, and Proactive Collaboration. The company describes its environment as diverse, inclusive, flexible, and collaborative, and encourages candidates to apply even if they do not meet every listed requirement.

Requirements

  • Degree in electrical engineering and 16+ years of experience, including 10+ years managing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Proven track record commercializing heavy industrial power hardware, such as utility-scale generators, inverters, or microgrid systems, from initial topology and rapid prototyping through DFM, design for test (DFT), and high-volume utility-grade scaling.
  • Proven success growing and managing technical teams.
  • Experience designing complex systems that require tradeoffs across engineering, risk, cost, and requirements, coordinating disciplines such as firmware/software, thermal, mechanical, electrical, supply chain, reliability, and systems.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment while building both the company and the product.
  • Deep understanding of power electronics, motors, inverters, PCBA design, mixed-signal routing, low-noise analog signal conditioning, and high-EMI environments.
  • Practical experience bringing power electronics to market, including understanding high-volume manufacturing and achieving high quality and reliability at low cost.

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical hardware development for complex power electronics and controls boards within the Linear Generator and for grid integration equipment.
  • Manage development systems and processes, product deliverables and roadmap, strategy, and goals.
  • Manage a high-performing electrical team and coordinate closely with controls and software teams.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality to optimize products for design for manufacturing (DFM) and cost.
  • Drive the compliance strategy to secure critical regulatory certifications.
