About The Position

Affirm’s Legal team partners with the business to support innovation and the growth of consumer financial products while managing regulatory, litigation, and enforcement risks globally. The Vice President, Deputy General Counsel will lead Affirm’s Product, Regulatory, Innovation, Licensing, Litigation & Enforcement teams across the United States and international jurisdictions. The position reports directly to the Chief Legal Officer & Chief Compliance Officer and is part of the CLO organization’s leadership team.

The role calls for building and leading a team of legal professionals and providing strategic guidance on products and legal matters across the listed domains. The Deputy General Counsel will work closely with the executive team—including the CEO, CLO/CCO, Chief Operations Officer, SVP Product, SVP Engineering, and CISO—and other cross-functional groups. The role is responsible for ensuring legal work is cohesive and aligned with the company’s strategic and operational needs, and for providing cross-department leadership and strategic guidance to the CLO and leadership team.

Requirements

• J.D. degree and membership in a state bar in good standing.
• 20 years of legal experience, including law firm and government experience (CFPB or FTC), or in-house experience supporting consumer financial, payments, litigation, and enforcement matters at a fintech or technology company.
• Expert knowledge of federal and state consumer protection lending laws, financial technology, payments, and litigation.
• Strong thought leadership and strategic thinking skills, including the ability to build cross-functional leadership consensus and implement organizational growth.
• Experience interacting with executive leaders, board members, and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to manage change, develop risk mitigation plans, and translate long-term strategies into near-term focus over a 2–4-year horizon.
• Experience scaling teams and a strong desire to manage, develop, and mentor senior attorneys and paraprofessionals.
• Strong critical-thinking skills for legal analysis and strategic counsel, effective written and oral communication skills, and the ability to lead while partnering collegially with internal and external teammates.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute strategic plans for the Product, Regulatory, Innovation, Licensing, Litigation & Enforcement functions in alignment with broader company strategies, global strategy, and organizational growth.
• Provide strategic direction and leadership across the functions through senior legal leaders, aligning priorities, accountability, and organizational effectiveness.
• Advise senior management, executive leaders, board members, and regulators on product, litigation, and regulatory matters.
• Partner with Product, Technology, Engineering, Bank, and other cross-functional leaders to provide legal guidance on product development, innovation, bank-related initiatives, and complex federal, state, and international consumer financial regulatory matters.
• Oversee legal strategy and responses to federal and state regulatory inquiries, bank partner examinations, and enforcement actions, working with Regulatory Affairs, Public Affairs, and Compliance to anticipate and mitigate material regulatory risks.
• Work with cross-functional leaders to develop solutions to complex company-wide problems and build consensus for long-term business initiatives.
• Manage functional-level financial results and budgets, including outside counsel and litigation spend.
• Lead, develop, and mentor senior attorneys and paraprofessionals.
