About The Position

SMBC is seeking a Vice President to lead the Credit Portfolio Risk Reporting and Oversight function. This role is responsible for the end-to-end development and delivery of executive content for regulatory and senior leadership forums, including the Board of Directors, Risk Committee, Executive Management Committee, and other senior management bodies across Wholesale Credit Risk. The Vice President will serve as the central architect of executive risk reporting, translating complex portfolio analytics, risk data, emerging risk insights, and strategic topics into clear, context-rich, decision-oriented narratives and presentations. The role will lead agenda development, storyboarding, portfolio analysis, executive messaging, and presentation production while establishing best practices and standards for executive communications across the organization. The successful candidate will partner closely with business units, Credit Officers, Enterprise Risk Management, Data and Analytics teams, and senior executives to ensure committee content is relevant, insightful, and aligned with evolving regulatory, strategic, and governance priorities.

Requirements

  • Eight or more years of experience in the financial services industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related field is required.
  • Expert-level PowerPoint skills with a proven ability to develop Board-quality presentations, executive narratives, and impactful data visualizations.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including portfolio analysis, data aggregation, and dashboard reporting.
  • Expert knowledge of credit risk management concepts and rating methodologies; strong understanding of commercial credit products; and knowledge of U.S. and international regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of the end-to-end credit lifecycle, including underwriting, ongoing monitoring, workout, and collections, as well as working knowledge of credit risk management frameworks and systems, such as the three lines of defense, risk appetite, and risk ratings.
  • Experience in managing credit processes, including approval workflows, credit committee processes and governance, credit approval, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; intellectual curiosity; the ability to synthesize complex issues; and strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a global financial services organization is preferred.
  • An advanced degree or professional certification, such as the CFA or FRM, is preferred.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, or similar analytics and visualization platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end production of executive-level presentations and briefing materials for regulators, the Board, the Risk Committee, and senior management forums.
  • Conduct portfolio-level analysis to identify key risk drivers, emerging themes, concentrations, and changes in the risk profile; synthesize quantitative and qualitative information into actionable insights for senior stakeholders.
  • Develop compelling, decision-oriented narratives that clearly articulate portfolio performance, risk trends, emerging risks, and strategic implications.
  • Create impactful visualizations, dashboards, and presentation materials that enhance executive understanding and decision-making.
  • Maintain a forward-looking governance calendar and oversee the timely delivery of recurring and ad hoc risk reporting.
  • Support special initiatives and manage projects involving reporting enhancements, deep-dive reviews, regulatory requests, and thematic risk assessments.
  • Partner with Data Management and Reporting teams to obtain relevant portfolio reports, identify key trends, and synthesize findings into a cohesive assessment of the credit portfolio.
  • Mentor junior members of the team.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to solicit input and translate complex credit issues and concepts into clear language for stakeholders with varying levels of expertise.
  • Provide effective leadership when working with direct reports, colleagues, and senior management.
  • Collaborate effectively across functions and levels of expertise, solicit and incorporate diverse perspectives, and present information accurately and in an actionable manner.
  • Communicate effectively at all levels of the organization, including with credit risk peers, business partners, senior executives, and external regulators.
