About The Position

The Vice President, Casualty Underwriting will be responsible for underwriting complex Casualty risks and contributing to the strategic development of the portfolio. This is both a technical and production-focused position. The successful candidate will combine strong underwriting judgement with commercial instincts, established broker relationships and the ability to identify profitable growth opportunities.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years’ Casualty underwriting and/or broking experience within the US insurance market, with significant experience across both primary and excess business.
  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualification, in Business, Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science or a related discipline.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of US Casualty products and coverages, including General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, Auto Liability and Umbrella/Excess Liability.
  • Strong relationships with key US wholesale and retail brokers, supported by a proven record of generating and retaining profitable business.
  • Recognised as a credible market practitioner and thought leader within the US Casualty insurance sector.
  • Experience negotiating, preparing and drafting policy and endorsement wordings.
  • Strong portfolio-management capabilities, including the ability to monitor performance, identify trends and implement corrective underwriting actions.
  • Exceptional organisational and time-management skills.
  • Proven leadership qualities, with the ability to build, motivate and develop a collaborative, high-performing global team.
  • A creative problem-solver with strong critical-thinking skills, sound commercial judgement and an ethical approach to decision-making.
  • The ability to operate effectively within a fast-paced, dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.
  • A confident communicator who can convey complex information clearly and authentically, influence stakeholders and construct persuasive arguments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic underwriting initiatives aligned with Relm’s objectives and changing market conditions.
  • Underwrite complex Casualty risks, including General Liability, Workers’ Compensation and Auto Liability.
  • Conduct detailed risk assessments using underwriting data, analytical tools and relevant market intelligence.
  • Apply disciplined underwriting judgement in accordance with Relm’s guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Implement effective risk-management strategies to identify and mitigate potential exposures.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients and other industry stakeholders.
  • Identify and convert profitable new business opportunities while supporting the retention of existing accounts.
  • Work closely with the sales and marketing teams to develop effective broker and client engagement strategies.
  • Provide expert advice and solutions that address clients’ individual insurance requirements.
  • Manage and optimise the Casualty portfolio to maintain a balanced and profitable book of business.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging trends and recommend appropriate adjustments.
  • Lead, support and develop Underwriting Assistants, promoting an efficient workflow and their continued professional development.
  • Contribute to Relm’s wider underwriting strategy and positively influence the culture of the business.
