About The Position

This position is part of the enterprise-wide Medical Office and is based at the IBR (primary) and CBC (secondary) divisions. This role is responsible for providing medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of the blood center laboratories at IBR and CBC, as well as providing support and guidance to collections staff, other internal stakeholders, and customer hospitals. The position is expected to actively participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and continuous learning. Finally, the position supports management in making informed medical decision and develops and reviews medical oversight and responsibility for technical and medical policies. Requirements

  • Primary M.D. or D.O.
  • Board certification in Transfusion Medicine.
  • At least three years’ experience in clinical/laboratory aspects of transfusion and apheresis medicine beyond fellowship training medicine with at least half in medical supervision of transfusion services or services of comparable scope and complexity.
  • Currently have, or have the ability to obtain with 6 months of employment, a full license to practice medicine in the following states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.
  • Currently have, or have the ability to obtain NYS Certificate of Qualification (COQ) in Blood Collection – Comprehensive. Hematology, Transfusion, Immunohematology, and cellular immunology etc.
  • Must have 5 available CLIA slots.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the requirements above that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical support across the enterprise and for assigned blood center and transfusion services.
  • Manage, trains, develops, mentors assigned staff.
  • Provide medical support and review for clinical services programs including but not limited to NMDP / allogenic / autologous stem cell collections, therapeutic phlebotomy collections, therapeutic apheresis, perioperative cell salvage, autologous and directed donor collections.
  • Participates in the related hospital administrative and clinical activities as requested by hospitals.
  • Develop and participate in cooperative translational and clinical research programs.
  • Develop policies, procedures and best practices for assigned programs, systems, or services.
  • Provide medical consultation and recommendations on training, technique, and education needs.
  • Develop close relationships with clinical staff and provide expert consultation.
  • Assures participation in quality assurance activities and optimal performance of assigned program and services.
  • Participate in medical students ‘and postgraduate teaching activities.
  • Publishes articles, chapters, books, and lectures and gives presentations on a local, national and international level.
  • Participate in regional, national and international societies dedicated to transfusion medicine, apheresis medicine and/or cellular therapies.
  • Provide daily coverage on all donor criteria questions and support on-call fellow as backup, make decisions per medical criteria and replies to donor questions/complaints.
  • Make recommendations for improvements on organizational processes and practices.
  • Participate in individual or team projects as required.
  • Participate in professional development by attending conferences and seminars and is an active participant in national organizations.
  • Readily available for telephone (or other electronic) consultation to the laboratory’s staff and clients during business hours and during assigned on-call.
  • Any related duties as assigned.
