About The Position

The School of Dentistry has an outstanding opportunity for The Vice Dean for Finance and Administration to join their team. Reporting to The Dean of Dentistry, the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration is the Chief Finance and Business Officer (CFBO) for the University of Washington School of Dentistry. The Vice Dean for Finance and Administration, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs (Chief Academic Officer), and Vice Dean for Clinics (Chief Dental Officer), comprise the Dean’s Strategic Advisory Council (SAC). The Dean uses the SAC as a top-level executive committee to set and track strategic priorities; provide executive oversight of school-wide academic, financial, administrative, clinical education, and resident training functions; and as a rapid response team on emerging issues. Other high-level tasks and initiatives may also be addressed by the SAC. The Vice Dean is the principal advisor for business planning and development supporting the Dean and the school’s executive administration, which includes assistant/associate deans and department chairs. In the CFBO role, the Vice Dean oversees operating resources of $70+ million annually in support of the school’s administrative, academic, research, patient care, and philanthropic missions, and employs substantial independent decision-making authority over the assignment, disbursement and use of financial, personnel, and facilities resources. The Vice Dean provides leadership in the development and implementation of the business and financial strategies supporting the school and leads the following central units in carrying out these responsibilities: Human Resources, Finance and Accounting including Workday Finance Shared Environments, Information Technology, Compliance, Business Development & Process Improvement, Patient Revenue Cycle Operations and Medical Coding, Central Purchasing, Accounts Payable and Workday Procurement Shared Environment. The Vice Dean has indirect reporting oversight for seven department administrators who manage finance, staffing, and business operations supporting eight academic departments and associated clinical operations, and the Associate Dean for Facilities Infrastructure and Development with respect to capital development, project management, space assignment, and maintenance and repair of school facilities. Internally, the Vice Dean serves as an ongoing chair or member of multiple administrative committees supporting the school, and regularly meets with the UWSOD Faculty Council, Department Chairs, and UWSOD faculty, staff and students to advise, update, and gather feedback on financial and business operations as well as multiple current or future projects. Externally, the Vice Dean represents the school in meetings and interactions with leadership in the UW Executive Office and serves as a member of the University Administrative Council, which is led by the UW Executive Office and includes executive-level staff representation from all UW campuses, colleges, schools, and major administrative units. Nationally, the Vice Dean represents the UW School of Dentistry through membership and representation with national organizations and with the BIG Financial Leadership Organization that represents all dental schools in the BIG conference.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive financial/business leadership experience, preferably in higher education, academic medicine, dentistry, or healthcare, including experience managing complex, multi-revenue-stream enterprises.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
  • Experience with Workday or other enterprise accounting systems.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the School’s principal financial advisor to the Dean and senior leadership team, including vice/associate/assistant deans, department chairs and major unit leaders.
  • Develop and implement short‑ and long‑term financial and business strategies aligned with the school’s strategic plan.
  • Lead multi‑year financial planning, forecasting, and scenario modeling linked with accreditation standards.
  • Develop and support strategic initiatives including academic program growth, new business/program development, clinical expansion, capital improvements and investments.
  • Identify and develop new revenue streams; negotiate contracts with external entities.
  • Participate, coordinate with and advise UW Executive Office leadership and committees on development of initiatives and programs affecting the school.
  • Represent the School and Dean on University committees, projects, processes and initiatives.
  • Represent the School and Dean with outside organizations on strategic initiatives and project development.
  • Oversee department administrators who have indirect reporting relationships to the Vice Dean and provide operational management and leadership at the departmental level.
  • Oversee Facilities Infrastructure and Development led by an Associate Dean with an indirect reporting line to the Vice Dean.
  • Lead and mentor finance, HR and other administrative heads within the school, including: -Human Resources (Director) -Finance and Accounting including Workday Finance Shared Environment (Director) -Information Technology (Director) -Compliance (Director) -Business Development & Process Improvement (Analyst) -Patient Revenue Cycle Operations and Medical Coding (Director) -Central Purchasing and Accounts Payable including Workday Procurement Shared Environment (Director)
  • Lead with purpose to cultivate a culture rooted in service excellence, accountability, collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement in support of the school’s mission.
  • Meet with each director/analyst/manager on a regular basis to identify needs and priorities under their domain and develop strategies and planning for addressing challenges and opportunities.
  • Implement processes, policies, and systems to support scalability, transparency, and effective working relationships.
  • Foster and invest in outreach from all units reporting to the Vice Dean to departmental leadership and administrative and clinical staff to improve relationships and support process improvements.
  • Support professional growth and development of unit leaders and staff.
  • Conduct annual reviews and work with unit leaders to build their portfolios and achieve their professional goals and priorities.
  • Continuously monitor and assess the school’s financial and business performance through interactions with faculty, staff, students and leadership, and monitoring of internal and external data sources.
  • Develop and provide key performance metrics and financial and operational reporting to provide unit and departmental leadership with the information needed to monitor, assess and respond to financial and operational needs, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of financial and human resource metrics supporting budgeting, accounting and reporting including development and maintenance of key performance indicator sites and reports to support clinical, educational and business success.
  • Oversee and continuously assess and analyze all activities supported by the annual operating budget of approximately $70 million, including identifying and responding to emerging needs, establishing priorities, and providing reporting tools that support actionable planning and decision-making.
  • Serve as the financial and business representative with UW administration, outside agencies and organizations, and the school’s educational accrediting organization.
  • Work with the Assistant Dean for Advancement to define fund raising priorities and spending plans.
  • Represent the school’s financial, human resources, and business needs on multiple operational and capital projects and committees at the UW.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned or as they develop.
