About The Position

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (ESFCOM) at Washington State University is seeking a Vice Chair for Emergency Medicine. This role reports to the Chair of the Department of Medical Education & Clinical Sciences (DMECS) and serves as the college’s thought leader for the development, design, coordination, and implementation of the Emergency Medicine curriculum. The Vice Chair will foster a positive and inclusive academic environment for learners and faculty, ensure comparability of educational experiences and learner assessment across campuses, and collaborate with college leadership and stakeholders to integrate Emergency Medicine across medical education, clinical practice, and scholarship. The position also aims to create clinical education experiences that add significant value to learning and competency. The role offers flexibility for clinical activities with a negotiable FTE range of .6 - 1.0 FTE. It is a 12-month, full-time, continuous career track position within the Department of Medical Education and Clinical Sciences, with an academic rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor commensurate with qualifications. The position can be based at any of the ESFCOM Clinical Campuses in WA State, including Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, or Everett.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent degree with Board Certification in Emergency Medicine through ABEM.
  • Three or more years of clinical patient care experience in their specialty.
  • Three or more years of experience teaching, developing, evaluating or leading educational programs at the undergraduate or graduate medical education level.
  • Current or previous appointment at the Associate rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent (for Associate Rank candidates).
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for associate rank (for Associate Rank candidates).
  • Current or previous appointment at the full professor rank or equivalent at a post-secondary institution; OR experience determined to be equivalent (for Full Professor Rank candidates).
  • Record of accomplishments applicable to the sub-track in teaching, research, clinical, scholarship, and/or service activities commensurate with school, college, and university standards for full professor rank (for Full Professor Rank candidates).

Responsibilities

  • Integrate the curricular and assessment framework for Emergency Medicine vertically and horizontally across the four years of the MD Program, in partnership with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (ADUME), including developing learning objectives, activities, and assessment methodologies; advising students; holding primary responsibility for the fourth-year core Emergency Medicine course; designing and approving elective experiences; and monitoring course and program evaluations.
  • Assure quality and comparability of curriculum delivery, educational quality, and learner outcomes across campuses, learning environments, and affiliate sites, in partnership with the Regional Associate Deans (RAD) and ADUME.
  • Lead specialty-specific orientation and faculty development for teaching faculty and preceptors, including CME opportunities, in coordination with the ADFD and other Vice Chairs.
  • Support the development and direction of Emergency Medicine graduate medical education programs, in partnership with the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (ADGME).
  • Support Emergency Medicine faculty and others in an assigned portfolio, including recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, retention, succession planning, faculty enhancement and remediation, conducting annual faculty performance evaluations, mentoring and coaching faculty, and addressing faculty concerns.
  • Serve as the primary communication link between departmental leadership and faculty, communicating departmental goals and changes, facilitating feedback, and monitoring morale and engagement.
  • Support the research agenda of the college in Emergency Medicine and medical education, using a scholarly, evidence-based approach, developing and implementing research, and supporting research, publications, presentations, and educational scholarship for faculty and students.
  • Provide departmental leadership and strategic direction in partnership with the DMECS Chair, including participating in departmental leadership meetings, assisting with strategic planning, policy development, and operational decision-making.
  • Participate in leadership initiatives across affiliated health systems, identify opportunities for departmental growth, develop new programs and services, lead special projects, and develop business cases and resource requests.
  • Support the faculty practice plan, including innovative integration with medical education.
  • Support quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrate service and citizenship to the department, college, university, state, and professional organizations, including serving as the external face of Emergency Medicine, representing the specialty on committees, modeling professionalism and leadership, and building relationships with COM stakeholders.
  • Travel to COM’s campuses and faculty practices throughout the state as needed.
  • Support student success through Emergency Medicine career advising, in partnership with the Office of Student Experience, including advising students, completing Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOEs), assisting non-matching students, and maintaining relationships with Emergency Medicine residency programs.
