About The Position

Provides medical care to animals used in support of lab project goals. Exercises independent professional judgment in the assessment of animal health and consults with veterinarians and investigators regarding appropriate diagnosis, therapy, and management. Assists in the planning, implementation, and modification of animal use in experiments. Works directly with the veterinarians and interacts with staff, residents, medical students, and other personnel using the animal facilities to exchange information and resolve problems. Serves as a surgical tech in the operating room, administering anesthesia and providing postoperative care. Trains residents/fellows/temporary lab personnel in laboratory animal methodology. Responsible for maintaining anesthetic, surgical, and radiological equipment and medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals. Additional duties may be assigned as the required to fulfill departmental responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Veterinary Technology
  • Veterinary Technologist State Certification
  • two years experience with lab animal species required
  • Must be able to follow oral and written directions.
  • Must have the ability to organize and carry out medical and surgical techniques independently.
  • Good manual dexterity
  • must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to work well with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science is desirable.
