About The Position

This role involves providing compassionate patient care, assisting veterinarians with examinations and procedures, maintaining medical records, performing laboratory procedures, dispensing medications, and ensuring a safe and clean hospital environment. The Veterinary Technician will work closely with lead technicians, practice managers, and veterinarians to deliver high-quality veterinary services. Client education and relations are also a key component of this position.

Requirements

  • HS diploma or educational equivalent.
  • Willingness to pursue further education leading to Licensed Veterinary Technician status.
  • At least one year of recent experience in veterinary practice or medical environment, with increasing responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform routine veterinary medical procedures (e.g., collect samples, draw blood, and administer vaccines).
  • Ability to maintain clear and accurate records and to charge clients for all products and services rendered.
  • Ability to properly restrain patients.
  • Knowledge of spelling and meaning of commonly used veterinary medical terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to show empathy toward clients and treat animals with respect and compassion.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • A commitment to outstanding client service.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 40 pounds without assistance and objects weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to stay on task and work energetically for entire shift, sometimes exceeding 10 hours per day.

Nice To Haves

  • Education equivalent to two years of college (pre-veterinary curriculum) or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
  • Three years’ recent experience in a veterinary practice, with increasing responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and use an appropriate level of veterinary medical knowledge, including staying updated on hospital programs, products, services, and continuing education requirements.
  • Provide compassionate patient care, ensuring patients are clean, dry, and comfortable, and alerting veterinarians to any changes in condition.
  • Recognize and follow procedures for patients with contagious diseases.
  • Medicate patients as required and perform basic emergency care, CPR, and intensive care.
  • Restrain animals safely and compassionately during examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with the transport, caging, and removal of animals.
  • Handle fractious and fearful animals with compassion and care.
  • Assist veterinarians with examinations by preparing forms, gathering instruments, and restraining animals.
  • Obtain base information from pets, discuss symptoms with clients, and use pre-exam checklists.
  • Obtain lab samples, including fecal samples, and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
  • Take, develop, and maintain radiographs using proper techniques.
  • Perform routine suture removals, nail trims, and weight checks.
  • Apply bandages and splints.
  • Sterilize instruments and prepare patients for procedures.
  • Administer injections as directed and examine patients for external problems.
  • Understand the usage and recommendations for prescription drugs and flea-control products.
  • Calculate drug dosages and fill prescriptions accurately.
  • Prepare prescription labels, package medications, and document controlled drug dispensation.
  • Follow OSHA and hospital safety guidelines regarding hazardous materials, radiographs, controlled drugs, and animal handling.
  • Clean, pack, and autoclave surgical materials, and keep the operating room stocked.
  • Monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery and dentistry, and administer intravenous fluid therapy.
  • Place and maintain urinary catheters.
  • Admit and discharge patients, ensuring they are well-groomed and medically appropriate upon discharge.
  • Ensure all animals receive needed medication and treat routine surgical patients.
  • Document all services rendered and organize daily patient status lists.
  • Communicate with clients regarding the medical status of their pets and follow up on patient progress.
  • Educate clients regarding preventive medicine, vaccination requirements, and post-procedure care.
  • Generate accurate treatment plans and communicate their value to clients.
  • Provide accurate information on fees, payment policies, and other hospital policies.
  • Manage the appointment schedule efficiently and promote the practice’s products, programs, and services.
  • Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment areas, and lab areas, and restock supplies.
  • Maintain and clean all medical equipment.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, standards, and procedures regarding uniforms, grooming, and conduct.
  • Serve as a representative of the hospital with courtesy, tact, and a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate initiative by seeking other work during downtime and assisting other employees.
  • Adhere to the posted work schedule, arriving promptly and following policies for reporting lateness or absences.
  • Organize work area and utilize time-management skills to maximize efficiency.
  • Prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks calmly and organized.
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings.
  • Answer phone calls when the Client Service Representative cannot.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of all supplies and inform the Office Manager when items need to be ordered.
  • Unpack, price, check expiration dates, and rotate stock of medical supplies.
