About The Position

VEG is offering a Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program designed to provide a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. This program allows students to work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians, engage in patient care, and explore a career in emergency veterinary medicine. The externship aims to build a strong foundation, inspire students, and offer exposure to the fast-paced world of ER veterinary care.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
  • Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
  • Able to start the program within six months of application.
  • Current rabies vaccination or titer required.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with diverse people.

Responsibilities

  • Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
  • Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for mentoring and learning.
  • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, inpatient care, and more.
  • Practice skills required by school's proficiency checklist with mentorship.
  • Experience the teamwork, pace, and heart of emergency care at VEG.
  • Explore a career in ER veterinary medicine.
