Requirements

  • Veterinary Technician I (CVT)
  • Experience and advancement through Kahuna leveling system
  • Ability to perform basic ophthalmic diagnostic tests
  • Ability to hold patients for detailed ocular exam
  • Ability to perform advanced ophthalmic diagnostic testing
  • Ability to set-up and assist with procedures and surgeries
  • Ability to place IV catheters and fluids for patients undergoing sedation or anesthesia
  • Ability to administer drugs through various routes
  • Ability to perform and monitor sedation/anesthesia
  • Skills including constant rate infusions, paralytics, ventilation
  • Ability to organize and maintain specialized ophthalmic equipment and supplies
  • Ability to educate clients on their pet’s ocular disease and care

  • Anesthesia training is available with help or our anesthesia specialist

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic ophthalmic diagnostic tests (Schirmer Tear Testing, IOP's, Fluorescein Staining) and help hold patients for detailed ocular exam
  • Perform advanced ophthalmic diagnostic testing (retinal electrical function, etc.)
  • Set-up and assist with procedures and surgeries that restore comfort and vision ranging from outpatient procedures to basic and complex surgeries
  • Assist with outpatient procedures: diamond burr debridement (to stimulate corneal healing), CO2 laser (to remove eyelid margin masses)
  • Assist with surgical procedures including eyelid surgeries, cherry eye surgery, corneal grafts, cataract surgery, retinal surgery, glaucoma surgery
  • For patients undergoing sedation or anesthesia, place IV catheters and fluids, administer drugs through various routes, perform and monitor sedation/anesthesia (with advances skills including constant rate infusions, paralytics, ventilation, etc.)
  • Help organize and maintain specialized ophthalmic equipment and supplies
  • Be the frontline in educating clients on their pet’s ocular disease and care
