About The Position

BluePearl Pet Hospital is hiring an extraordinary Oncology Veterinary Technician. This position involves treating and monitoring patients, supporting clinicians with patient care, and client communication.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two or more years’ experience in a specialty veterinary hospital preferred.

  • Unrestricted, current authorization to work in the U.S. and not require future sponsorship for an employment-based green card.

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical exams, accurately count heart rate, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
  • Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert the doctor when abnormal.
  • Perform phlebotomy.
  • Place peripheral intravenous catheters in cephalic veins.
  • Calculate basic medical math.
  • Set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration.
  • Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents.
  • Safely dispense, reconstitute, and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents.
  • Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages.
  • Properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion.
  • Have knowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and what to do if it happens.
  • Admit Oncology patients and obtain thorough history including current medications and dosages, response to treatment and side effects, intensity and duration.
  • Discharge Oncology patients from the hospital, including basic client education on handling patient eliminations after chemotherapy, handling oral chemotherapy at home, chemotherapy and radiation side effects, and oral medication administration.
  • Maintain a solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and be able to converse with other veterinary professionals in medical terms.
  • Address client concerns and answer them appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization.
  • Quickly and competently facilitate incoming calls.
  • Have knowledge of tumor types.
  • Understand diagnostic work-up protocols (including oncology-specific terminology for each tumor/cancer type per each hospital’s protocol).
  • Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications.
  • Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
  • Maintain hospital for day-to-day function and operation (stocking, cleaning, etc.).
