About The Position

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), a leading veterinary hospital, is offering a 52-week Veterinary Technician Internship program for graduates of AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology programs. This program, initiated in 1985, aims to provide optimal patient care training and post-graduate education in a high-volume, specialized environment. Interns will gain extensive practical experience through rotations in various departments, including Anesthesia, Behavior, Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Medical/Surgical Units, along with elective rotations in other specialties. The program includes bi-monthly lectures and labs to enhance clinical techniques. Interns will participate in the comprehensive care of animals admitted to the hospital, assist with consultations, and manage interdepartmental transfers. The goal is to equip interns with the skills, experience, and confidence needed for successful careers in veterinary technology.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an AVMA-accredited program in Veterinary Technology or expecting to graduate prior to the start of the program.
  • Submit an application.
  • Submit a resume with supporting documents.
  • Submit official or unofficial college transcripts.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation from professors or employers.
  • Submit a cover letter describing career objectives and reasons for applying.
  • Must possess or obtain a Veterinary Technician license or permit to practice in the State of New York before the start of the Internship.
  • Passage of the VTNE must be completed and proof emailed by August 31st, 2026.
  • A passing VTNE score of 425 (or 75 depending on state or province) is required to practice veterinary technology in New York State.
  • Submit a copy of VTNE test score results indicating a passing grade.

Responsibilities

  • Rotate through various departments including Anesthesia, Behavior, Emergency/Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Medical/Surgical Unit.
  • Complete 2 elective rotations in one of the other 20 specialties.
  • Work alongside clinical educators, veterinary technician specialists, technician preceptors, and veterinarians.
  • Receive bi-monthly lectures and participate in wet and dry labs in various clinical techniques.
  • Participate in the care and medical treatment of all animals admitted to the hospital.
  • Assist with consultations and interdepartmental transfers.
  • Acquire standard and advanced skillsets within specific specialties during medical rotations.
  • Gain experience in perioperative patient care and surgical care during surgical department rotations.
