About The Position

The Critical Care Floater Technician provides advanced technical support to the ICU and Emergency & Critical Care teams at Nashville Veterinary Specialists in Nashville, TN. This role serves as a flexible clinical resource during the hospital's highest-volume and highest-acuity hours, supporting ICU admissions, advanced procedures, patient flow, and continuity of care between day and overnight teams.

Requirements

  • LVT, LVMT, or CVT credential preferred; experienced Veterinary Assistants with advanced technical skills may also be considered.
  • Minimum two years of experience in a 24-hour emergency or specialty referral veterinary hospital required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in advanced critical care nursing skills, ICU workflow, patient stabilization, and emergency veterinary medicine.
  • Strong critical thinking, patient prioritization, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Ability to remain calm during emergencies, multitask while maintaining attention to detail, mentor less experienced team members, and collaborate effectively with the veterinary medical team; ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
  • Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Complete ICU admissions and support efficient patient movement from ER to ICU while prioritizing workflow based on patient acuity.
  • Perform advanced technical procedures within hospital protocols and scope of practice, including central venous catheter, venous sampling line, nasogastric tube, and urinary catheter placement, as well as arterial blood gas sampling.
  • Prepare, initiate, and monitor advanced therapies, including blood product transfusions, high-flow nasal oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, and anesthesia and sedation monitoring.
  • Prepare for and assist doctors with advanced Critical Care procedures, including thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, pericardiocentesis, temporary tracheostomy tube placement, and pigtail catheter placement.
  • Assist with ICU treatments, procedures, discharges, client visitation, patient stabilization, and other patient care needs based on hospital and patient needs.
  • Support efficient handoffs between day and overnight teams and adapt priorities based on patient acuity and hospital workflow.
  • Serve as an advanced clinical resource during high-volume and high-acuity periods while maintaining calm, organized, and effective patient care.
  • Mentor and train less experienced Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants while collaborating closely with Emergency & Critical Care doctors and the ER/ICU team.
