About The Position

The University of Maryland, Baltimore's Veterinary Resources program is seeking a Veterinary Laboratory Animal Research Specialist (Laboratory Animal Research Specialist) to support veterinary care and research activities on campus. The incumbent will provide advanced veterinary technical skills to research procedures, ensuring animal welfare. The veterinary technician will work in a highly collaborative environment supporting research project goals. The incumbent will review and understand animal use protocols to ensure regulatory compliance with procedures. This position will assist clinical veterinarians and may obtain and ship samples and tissues for clinical and research purposes. May confer with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and interface with US Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors. Work is performed in accordance with animal welfare regulations, USDA, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Service (PHS), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), IACUC guidelines, and United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 21CFR58 Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, chemistry, or field of study related to the animal science.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with animals in an academic animal program, a research laboratory setting, contract research organization (CRO), or in an animal hospital is preferred, including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization in rodent/multi-species clinical evaluation and procedures.
  • Experience in veterinary procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of position requirements.
  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations and laws.
  • Skill in veterinary technical procedures and effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist (RLATg), Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide anesthesia support for imaging and surgical procedures for rodents and large animal species.
  • Prepare and administer clinical and research medications orally or by injection.
  • Apply clinical judgement and veterinary technician skills during health checks.
  • Use animal management platforms to maintain animal medical records.
  • Handle and obtain biological specimens.
  • Perform procedures in ABSL-2 areas.
  • Operate digital x-ray unit and software.
  • Access, review, and understand IACUC-approved protocols to ensure investigator compliance during procedures.
  • Effectively communicate with investigators and laboratory staff.
  • Assist with rodent health surveillance procedures.
  • Assist with animal enrichment activities.
  • Order and inventory drugs and clinical supplies. Maintain and stock treatment rooms, surgical suites and necropsy area.
  • Handle and administer controlled substances.
  • Assist with writing and modifying applicable standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Comply with occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Assist in training Veterinary Resources staff and laboratory staff.
  • Obtain and maintain GLP certification to support research studies and clinical cases.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
