About The Position

West Hills Animal Hospital is hiring an experienced Veterinary Assistant for part-time weekend work at its busy 24-hour veterinary hospital. The role involves caring for patients and boarders, supporting doctors and veterinary technicians, and helping provide a comfortable experience for pets and their owners. The position offers opportunities to develop skills and pursue career growth in areas such as veterinary technology, specialty medicine, and leadership.

Requirements

At least one year of general practice or emergency veterinary experience.
Ability to stand, lift, and perform work duties for a minimum of eight hours.
Ability to lift large boxes, dog food, and canine and feline patients weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to write neatly, communicate well with others, attend staff meetings, and adhere to training programs.
Own transportation.
Be organized, work well with others, and follow directions.
Work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Maintain a neat, clean appearance and adhere to the WHAH uniform.
Show a strong willingness to learn and a great love for animals.

Responsibilities

Care for special-needs boarders, including diabetic, geriatric, and epileptic animals.
Restrain canine, feline, and exotic patients for doctors and technicians.
Clean and maintain areas and materials, including floors, cages, dishes, garbage, surgical sites, and the dental suite.
Administer oral medications.
Document the general well-being of hospitalized patients and boarders.
Assist with emergency-room protocols and ensure the ER table is ready for critical patients.
Prepare and sterilize surgical materials according to the surgical handbook.
Assist licensed veterinary technicians with temperature, pulse, and respiration checks and blood pressure measurements.
Examine incisions for cleanliness and closure.
Triage emergency appointments in coordination with the on-premises ER doctor.
Capture radiographs, including thoracic and abdominal views.
