Veterinary Assistant at St. Francis Veterinary Hospital
About The Position
The Veterinary Assistant assists veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment. The role includes monitoring hospitalized pets, maintaining inventory, preparing prescriptions, performing routine in-house laboratory work, educating clients about veterinary care and procedures, and assisting with surgical procedures. The assistant supports outpatient examinations, surgery, diagnostics, medication administration, animal handling, and the upkeep of clinical areas and equipment. The position requires weekend availability as needed and pays $15.00–$17.00 per hour.
Requirements
- Ability to work on weekends as required.
- Ability to lift patients and carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance.
- Practice OSHA safety techniques, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Basic math skills and ability to calculate medication dosages.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with MS Office applications.
- Strong communication skills to support patient safety.

- Previous veterinary experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with veterinary medicine, surgery, and other tasks as needed.
- Assist with outpatient exams by taking patient histories, vital signs, and weights and providing client education.
- Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during surgery.
- Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing; and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
- Take, develop, and maintain radiographs while following proper safety procedures.
- Handle and restrain animals during examinations.
- Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the veterinarian’s discretion.
- Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment areas, and laboratory areas; restock exam rooms with supplies.
- Help keep public areas clean and clean and maintain medical equipment.
- Interact with clients warmly, courteously, and professionally, and provide compassionate care to patients.
- Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members about client discussions, patient plans, and client concerns.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
