Veterinary Assistant - Newington Shelter
About The Position
The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking two skilled Veterinary Assistants to join their team at the Newington location. This full-time, benefit-eligible position is ideal for individuals passionate about animal welfare. The role involves assisting in the provision of quality medical and surgical care for animals, including routine preventative care, medication administration, patient progress assessment, basic laboratory tests, surgical preparation and post-operative care, educating adopters and fosters on medical conditions and home care, and assisting with end-of-life care. Responsibilities also include daily animal care within the medical department and facility disinfection and cleaning. The position requires attention to detail, comfort with technology for electronic medical records, and the ability to think critically as part of patient treatment plans. Candidates should be self-starters, comfortable working independently and as part of a team in a busy environment, and possess a basic understanding of different animal types. While primarily based in Newington, occasional work at other locations may be required.
Requirements
- Prior experience working in a shelter or veterinary clinic
- Detail focused
- Comfortable using technology to maintain accurate electronic medical records
- Ability to think critically
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge of animal handling and medical care
- Basic understanding of different types of companionship animals
- Ability to deal with different communication styles
- Ability to handle multiple priorities
- Enjoy a busy environment
- 1-2 years minimum experience as a vet assistant in a clinic or shelter setting
- Ability to perform physically strenuous activities including lifting moderate to heavy weights (up to 40 lbs.)
- Ability to stand and/or bend, push brooms and/or mops, and walk and/or control dogs and/or cats
- Use of cleaning solutions
- Ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time
- Prior experience with animal restraint
- Proficiency in computers and on-line medical records
Nice To Haves
- Prior surgical experience
- Veterinary Assistant Certification
Responsibilities
