About The Position

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment at Calera Animal Hospital. The role includes monitoring hospitalized pets, maintaining inventory, preparing prescriptions, performing routine in-house laboratory work, educating clients about veterinary care and procedures, and assisting with surgical procedures. The assistant also helps with outpatient exams, patient preparation and monitoring during surgery, diagnostic sample collection, radiographs, animal handling, and medication and treatment administration at the veterinarian’s discretion. Bilingual ability is preferred.

Requirements

• Ability to work weekends as required.
• Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; lifting or carrying items over 25 pounds requires assistance.
• Practice OSHA safety techniques, including proper use of PPE.
• Basic math skills and ability to calculate medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with MS Office applications.
• Strong communication skills to support patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians with veterinary medicine, surgery, and other tasks as needed.
• Assist with outpatient exams by taking patient histories, vital signs, and weights, and providing client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor their vital signs during surgery.
• Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs while following proper safety procedures.
• Handle and restrain animals during examinations.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the veterinarian’s discretion.
• Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment areas, and laboratory areas, and restock exam rooms with supplies.
• Help keep public areas clean and clean and maintain medical equipment.
• Interact warmly, courteously, and professionally with clients, and compassionately with patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members about client discussions, patient plans, and client concerns.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
