About The Position

The Veterinary Assistant is an essential member of the veterinary healthcare team who supports patient care, clinical operations, and hospital efficiency. Veterinary assistants perform supportive clinical and operational tasks based on training, demonstrated competency, hospital protocols, and applicable regulations. This role contributes to patient comfort, safety, workflow efficiency, and a positive client experience. Requirements

  • High School diploma is required
  • Minimum of 1 year experience with medical/veterinary laboratory equipment
  • Adapts positively to the ever-changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.
  • Must possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills and problem-solving methods.
  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role

Responsibilities

  • Provide restraint of pets for examination and treatment by veterinarians.
  • Prepare medications (both injectable and oral medications) for outpatients and inpatients.
  • Pull all packs and equipment needed for surgical procedures and set up the needed OR suite(s).
  • Assist doctors in exam rooms by escorting clients to exam rooms, obtaining patient’s history from clients and recording it on patient’s medical record, obtaining and recording patient’s temperature and weight, assist doctor with patient’s examination.
  • Administer all medications and treatments written on each patient’s daily treatment plan as directed by the attending veterinarian.
  • Cleaning up the suite after a procedure has been completed so it is ready for the next case to come in. This includes: taking dirty instruments and soiled laundry to Pack and Scrub, cleaning suction bottles, putting away any unopened instruments and supplies, emptying trash cans, and replacing trash bags.
  • Properly clean surgical instruments, prepare for sterilization.
  • Help the doctors treat patients, assisting veterinary technicians in medical or minor surgical procedures such as irrigating wounds, medicating and bandaging.
  • Collect blood and urine samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Prepare all laboratory request forms, and submit samples to labs.
  • Perform in-house clinical laboratory procedures such as PCV/TP, CBCs, blood chemistries utilizing Idexx, ABL, VCM analyzers, and Heska digital cytology.
  • Convey information in an accurate and professional way between the doctor and the client when the doctor is unavailable to speak with the client directly.
  • Teach clients to administer oral, ophthalmic, and ear medications and to give subcutaneous injections or fluids.
  • Make notes in patient files of all conversations with clients.
  • Access all imaging modalities utilizing software. Be able to email or burn images to a file such as a CD or USB drive.
  • Operate digital radiography units.
  • Assist kennel personnel in keeping patients clean and dry at all times.
  • Assist kennel personnel in keeping laundry and dishes clean.
  • Accurately record, maintain, and review medical records by recording daily treatment plans, all diagnostics, patient progress notes and recording services or goods on the medical record with attached fees for invoicing.
  • Communicate patient status to doctors, other technicians/assistants, and clients.
  • Prepare for next day's treatments/procedures by restocking supplies in all areas.
  • Prepare patients for discharge, being especially careful to ensure that patients being discharged are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in all areas of the hospital.
  • Perform daily and weekly cleaning duties.
  • Assist with inventory; inform inventory manager as needed about items that need to be ordered, unpack boxes of medical supplies, check packing list and expiration dates, rotate stock and store.
  • Assist other departments, when necessary, as directed by your supervisor.
