About The Position

This Veterinary Assistant position primarily supports technicians and patients within the Large Animal hospital, focusing on Equine Critical Care, Medicine, and Surgery & Lameness services. The role may also assist in other large animal sections like Livestock Medicine and Large Animal Radiation. This position requires basic knowledge of medical procedures, biosecurity surveillance, and equipment usage. The assistant will aid in daily case management by stocking, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and ensuring continuity of patient care under the guidance of the primary technician. Availability to work holidays, overnights, and weekends is necessary due to the hospital's 24/7/365 operation.

Requirements

One year of experience caring for horses and providing equine handling experience OR a combination of related education and/or experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to one (1) year.
HS Diploma or GED.
Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

Responsibilities

Assists in providing efficient, optimal patient care including: triage, assessment, treatments, monitoring and restraint.
Collaborates with interns, residents, faculty and technicians to ensure appropriate treatment plans by evaluating patient status, response to therapy, collecting diagnostic samples, and setting up for procedures.
Provides clinical and technical assistance such as: fluid and drug administration, IV sampling, blood gas collection, operation and trouble shooting of all specialty-related equipment, set up and break down of procedures, cleaning and stocking clinical areas.
Assist in out-patient appointments such as neuro exams, endoscopy procedures, ultrasound exams, respiratory exams, ophthalmology exams.
Responsible for biosecurity awareness by leading by example and educating clients within the Equine barn.
Learn process to appropriately clean and store equipment between uses to protect biosecurity of equipment.
Participate in the annual process of deep cleaning of the equine hospital.
Uphold information presented to DVM and FRCC students within orientation that includes basic knowledge of the working function of the main hospital and equine isolation unit.
