Requirements

  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the province of Ontario
  • Member in good standing of the CVO
  • Experience in tele-medicine or similar role in veterinary clinic
  • Resilient attitude when faced with unpredictable or emotionally demanding situations
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and commitment to animal welfare practices and philosophies
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal)
  • Sound judgement and decision making ability
  • High attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  • Team player with solid interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel to Animal Centres as required

Nice To Haves

  • Population-based medicine and shelter medicine experience are an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provide telemedicine services and in-person support for individual and population-based medical cases across 6-7 provincial Ontario SPCA Animal Centres, for animals in shelter and in foster homes.
  • Advocate for animals in care in collaboration with Ontario SPCA Animal Centre teams to ensure medical, emotional, and behavioural needs are met through daily and weekly rounds.
  • Provide direct medical oversight for populations of animals transferred into care through the Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Transfer Hub, including physical examinations, intake procedures, specialized testing, disease tracking, and disease outbreak management.
  • Utilize Society’s shelter medicine software to monitor, support, and track animals in care across the province virtually.
  • Collaborate on medical cases with external VCPRs and specialists.
  • Develop policies, protocols, and disclosures in collaboration with the Shelter Health & Wellness team.
  • Ensure Ontario SPCA policies and procedures related to infection control are followed.
  • Research, track, and implement shelter intake measures for emerging infectious diseases across the province and within communities where transferred animals originate.
  • Actively participate in continuing education activities to stay updated on advancements in shelter medicine.
  • Train and develop surgical skills in a supported environment.
