Veterans to Engineers

VetJobs•Oak Ridge, TN

About The Position

The Veterans to Engineers (VTE) program supports veterans in finding part-time to full-time employment while pursuing an engineering degree. Selected military members and veterans relocate to the Oak Ridge/Knoxville, Tennessee area and attend an ABET-accredited college or university. Students may complete initial requirements at a two-year institution, but must transfer to a four-year ABET-accredited institution after earning an associate degree or the minimum credits required for transfer. Participants are expected to use Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits or other scholarship opportunities where applicable. Upon graduation, interns may be offered a full-time engineering position with Consolidated Nuclear Security. Participants rotate among different groups throughout CNS, with the intention of moving into permanent employment in Mission Engineering after completing their degree. They work with technical personnel in engineering, maintenance, operations, production, research and development, and related functions to analyze and evaluate technical and engineering problems; develop experimental outlines; schedule procedural steps; and establish priorities. Duties include conducting tests, experiments, and analyses; operating and troubleshooting equipment; gathering, reducing, evaluating, and interpreting data; and preparing analyses, reports, and procedures. The work includes routine and some unique non-routine technical support activities performed using standard procedures within the discipline. Interns conduct routine tests and experiments and assist with operating more complex equipment or operations. They apply some creativity to generate ideas and may recommend improvements to methods and procedures. They follow prescribed routines, methods, and practices, applying independent judgment to routine and occasional non-routine matters. Contacts are primarily within the organization, with occasional work across organizational lines. Interns usually assist experienced engineers with basic tasks, may lead new personnel in routine functions, and work cooperatively toward common goals.
