Veterans to Engineers Intern

Consolidated Nuclear Security•Oak Ridge, TN

About The Position

The Veterans to Engineers (VTE) program supports veterans in pursuing engineering degrees while gaining work experience through rotational assignments with different groups throughout Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS). Selected participants relocate to the Oak Ridge/Knoxville, Tennessee area and attend an ABET-accredited college or university. Participants may begin at a two-year institution, but must transfer to a four-year ABET-accredited institution after earning an associate degree or the minimum credits required for transfer. They are expected to use Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits or other scholarship opportunities, as applicable. After graduation, interns may be offered a full-time engineering position with CNS in Mission Engineering. Participants work with technical personnel in engineering, maintenance, operations, production, research and development, and related functions. The work includes analyzing and evaluating technical and engineering problems, developing experimental outlines, scheduling procedural steps, and establishing priorities. Interns conduct tests, experiments, and analyses; operate and troubleshoot equipment; gather, reduce, evaluate, and interpret data; and prepare analyses, reports, and procedures. Work includes routine and some unique non-routine technical support activities performed according to standard procedures within the discipline. Interns perform routine tests and experiments and assist with more complex equipment or operations. They may generate ideas, recommend improvements to methods and procedures, exercise independent judgment on routine and occasional non-routine matters, assist experienced engineers with basic tasks, and lead new personnel in routine functions. The position is intended for veterans pursuing an engineering degree in an eligible field. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance. The role may require entry into Material Access Areas and participation in the Human Reliability Program, including successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and potentially a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination. Candidates accepting an offer must pass a pre-placement physical, drug screening, and background investigation. U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance applicants.
